Named Washington's Top Rated Wedding Photojournalist by Washingtonian Bride & Groom Magazine 2009

"The only thing we needed to know about Greg was that the largest news organization in the world trusted him to cover the President of the United States. If he can handle that pressure, he can certainly handle our wedding."  - Tim McCaughan & Kristan Biggars

Voted Washingtonian’s Top Rated Wedding Photojournalist

As publication of Washingtonian magazine’s new wedding guide “Washingtonian Bride & Groom” draws near, the listings on the Washingtonian website have been updated to reflect their current directory of recommended wedding vendors.

I received a wonderful surprise this morning when I opened the site to my listing and found that I have been chosen Washingtonian’s top rated wedding photojournalist! This is a real honor for me because the voting is done by my colleagues and peers in the DC wedding market, along with the editorial staff at Washingtonian.

I am very humbled to receive this designation. There are a lot of great wedding photographers and photojournalists in the DC area and to be the leading vote getter in this category is totally unexpected.

I want to say a big THANK YOU to everyone who voted in support of me. I am truly floored by this!

I also want to say congratulations to the top vote getters in other categories:

Workshops and Speaking Engagements for 2009

For those interested in attending a workshop or a speaking engagement with me, here are the dates of 2009 events I am currently participating in.

February 2-5 – Foundation Workshop – Allen, Texas

What is FW7? – Unlike other wedding photography workshops, the seventh annual Foundation Workshop (FW7) offers wedding photographers the unique opportunity to work closely with top photojournalists and established documentary wedding photographers.

Under the guidance of experienced instructors, FW7 participants will explore and develop their photojournalistic skills through the process of shooting and editing a complete story of real subjects. There will be no staged weddings or model shoots. Participants will be challenged to approach their real assignments creatively and encouraged to shoot passionately while establishing a foundation for learning the skills and perspective of a photojournalist.

FW7 enrollment is limited to 26 participants.

Feburary 12-19 – Wedding and Portrait Photographers International – Las Vegas, NV

I have a lot of responsiblities at WPPI this year.

First, I am teaching a TWO DAY PLUS CLASS on Feb. 12-13 entitled “The Art of Visual Storytelling”. This will be a great hands-on class that will involve a substantial amount of shooting and editing by the participants.

The first morning we will spend some time learning what photojournalism is really about. Not just wedding photojournalism, but about real news photojournalism and how it applies to documentary story telling. Thenwe will photograph a real project with the goal of telling a story through each participants own eyes and vision. The final afternoon will be spent editing and producing our story. There are a few spots still available for this class so don’t delay in registering if you are interested in this workshop.

On Saturday and Sunday I will be participating as a judge in the WPPI Awards of Excellence Print Competition. It’s a great honor to be asked to judge a competition of the best of the best in wedding photography.

One Tuesday Feb. 17 at 630pm I’ll be presenting a two-hour platform entitled “Capturing Moments that Matter”.

Join two-time Pulitzer Prize-winning photographer Greg Gibson as he talks about his 20-year career in journalism and his transition to wedding photography. A top photojournalist whose covered everything from the Gulf War to the White House, Greg will discuss some of the hard lessons learned while working at the competitive, deadline-a-minute pace of news photojournalism and how they apply to his new career in wedding photography. By combining light, emotion, interaction and eye for the decisive moment, Greg will demonstrate how great wedding images can be made anywhere.

July 19-24 – Roots Workshop – Cape Cod, MA

12 students. 9 staff. 3 teams. 6 life-changing days.

Roots Workshop is an introduction to photojournalism for already-established wedding photographers interested in gaining a deeper understanding of the roots of this chosen genre through hands-on instruction and editorial photo assignments.

While living under the same roof in Cape Cod, students will be divided into three teams of four students, each with a leader and a shooting mentor. Monday is designated as team building day, with shooting and technical exercises geared towards individual need. Tuesday and Wednesday will be reserved for shooting real editorial assignments during the day, each unique to Cape Cod, with group editing sessions at night. Students will be visited by their mentor and/or team leader for a minimum of one hour each day during their assignment. Thursday will be an editing day to prepare for an evening slideshow of the students work and a celebratory New England clambake.

While Roots is designed to provide an amazing experience on Cape Cod among a group of passionate, creative minds, it is most definitely not a fluff workshop. Students will work hard and be critiqued hard. The opportunity for personal growth is enormous given our unprecedented small student to staff ratio (2-1). Participants who maximize these resources and engage in the experience to the fullest an immediately apply their newly learned storytelling skills to their wedding photography.

August 10-13 – PhotoImage Brazil – São Paulo, Brazil

I will be participating in PhotoImage Brazil once again in 2009.

At right is a picture of me giving the Keynote address in the wedding photography program to approximately 900 Brazilian photographers.

In 2009 I will be doing a one or two day hand-on shooting workshop.

Details are still being ironed out and more information will be forthcoming.

But what about the PhotoExpeditions in Brazil?
We do have plans to do at least one, possibly two more PhotoExpeditions in the Brazilian outback but the dates and details have not been firmed up yet. Potential time frames are April/May and/or August.

The PhotoExpeditions are fun and exciting trips into the Pantanal, a beautiful and exotic wetlands area in southern Brazil. Participants will see and experience beautiful wildlife and scenery, as well as have the opportunity to photograph the Pantaneiro cowboys on real working farms and ranches. This is a unique opportunity document a very traditional but fading way of life. Please see other posts on this blog related to our “Cowboys & Crocodiles” project.

More information on PhotoExpeditions to come later.

Honored in the New Washingtonian Wedding Guide – “Washingtonian Bride & Groom”

Washingtonian magazine, locally known in the DC area as the publisher of one of the most complete and comprehensive wedding guides available, is breaking with tradition this year. Instead of the usual wedding guide printed inside the January issue of Washingtonian, they are producing a completely separate, stand-alone magazine appropriately titled “Washingtonian Bride & Groom”. The new magazine will be available December 15.

What makes the Washingtonian Wedding Guide exceptionally unique and valuable is that they publish a very exclusive listing of recommended wedding vendors. The editorial staff conducts a rigorous vetting and review process of all the photographers, videographers, planners, florists caterers, venues, etc. that are included in this list. Since there is an actual approval process, it’s not possible for a vendor to simply buy their way in by purchasing advertising space. It’s a great honor to be included and listed alongside some of the best companies in the DC wedding industry.

This independent and unbiased third party approval process is a powerful tool for couples looking for vendors to work with in planning their wedding.

I have been fortunate to be a part of this list since 2004 and it was nice to once again get official notification today that I will be included for 2009 also!

Erica & Scott

I want to get some new wedding work out so I am posting another great 2007 wedding.
